I was allowed to photograph several rare Bibles this morning. Hardin-Simmons was recently given a collection of old and rare Bibles. You can see a few of the pics here.

new logo for Logsdon

By scott  //  Designs  //  No Comments

Logsdon wanted to simplify their logo and also achieve an updated look with a new logo. Their old logo was hard to reproduce in print or in reverse. There were also several versions in use using “school of theology” or “seminary” or “Hardin-Simmons University” and sometimes a combination of those phrases. We were able to simplify it by just going with the name Logsdon. We decided to keep the window as part of the design since it is very unique to Logsdon, and also very recognizable and looked upon fondly by alumni.

Range Rider cover design

By scott  //  Designs  //  No Comments

I designed this cover for the Spring 2009 issue of the Hardin-Simmons alumni magazine, Range Rider. The feature section of the magazine showcased alumni who are working in some sort of environmental field. I had the idea to illustrate environmentalism with the florescent light bulb. The bulb was photographed with a black background as shown, and soldered to a lamp cord to illuminate it, while still being able to show the base of the bulb. I cleaned up the bottom of the base where they wire was showing in photoshop, and adjusted some of the color and sharpness of the photo. Other than that, it is pretty much shown as it was photographed. We used 2 strobe flashes set on low power to give the bulb some additional highlights and shadows. The back cover was shot in a similar fashion. We broke the bulb without harming the filament. Then put the bulb in a lamp and set the camera to take multiple frames very quickly. The shutter was triggered at the same time I was plugging in the lamp. There was enough time to get 4 or 5 frames before the smoke and light was gone. Both photos were taken by Joseph Bailey with my assistance.
